Columbia engineers have developed an AI that challenges the long-standing belief in forensics that fingerprints from different fingers of the same person are unique.

The AI, trained on a database of 60,000 fingerprints, found that fingerprints from different fingers of the same person share strong similarities.

The AI achieved an accuracy of 77% in identifying when seemingly unique fingerprints belonged to the same person.
